Why does God allow bad things to happen to people like rape, murder, cancer, etc.?

God did not make automatons; he made us to have free-wills to choose to love and follow Him or to go our own sinful ways. What if every time someone stole something God caused their hand fall off? If someone used the Lord’s name in vain their tongue fell out or if someone committed adultery? This was death to both parties. We, of course would be afraid to say or do anything.

God does not want "robots" to love Him, He wants us to come to Him of our own free-will. Who would want to be made to love by “force”? It wouldn’t even qualify as love, but forced obedience. There is a price to pay for rebellion and disobedience,
asking for forgiveness is so important. We are simply living with the consequences of our bad decisions. When we let God have control of our lives He gives us so many promises and protections. Unfortunately, many people choose unwisely. Prov:19:3
