So Satan tricked Adam & Eve out of their earthly rights. But who exactly is this wily fellow? First, he was an angel, one of beauty - so much so that his sin of "pride" is what got him thrown out of heaven.

He is often thought to have had great talent with music (Ezekiel 28:11-19)(the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes -known as timbrels, drums and tamborines). When Satan was evicted as an angel, he drew a vast number of angels with him (Rev. 12:4, 9). Some of the fallen angels are loose and some are bound in a place called the Abyss (Luke 8:31). The loose ones we call "demons".

Why would he think this? It is because Satan knows and believes and clearly understands God and His unbreakable laws. Again:(Gen. 3:1) -- Satan was endued with more understanding than any other animal in the brute creation. He obviously understood more than man to so easily take over the ownership of the Earth.

Interesting Thought: Why so many people think they are Christians because they know of and believe in God? Obviously, Satan knows of, believes in and operates quite handily in God Laws. But is he a Christian? I think not.
